Creation in Christ Sunday September 6 2026

Gospel: John 1:1-5

The holy gospel according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

John begins his gospel with this prologue: a hymn to the Word through whom all things were created. This Word became flesh and brought grace and truth to the world.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

The assembly is seated.

Creation in Christ Sunday

celebrates the ongoing creation of the world

in and through Christ,

who sustains, unites, and holds all created things.

Our God speaks - and it happens.

Our God is Creator,

and at that moment,

that spark,

that bang,

that moment of Creation,

in the beginning,

God’s Spirit hovered over the waters.

God’s Ruah,

God’s breath

breathed life into creation.

God spoke,

God spoke the Word,

The Word that was God,

the Word that was with God in the beginning,

I find this fascinating,

Science tells us about the big bang theory

not the TV show, the scientific theory,

and that at that moment of creation,

infinitely small,

exploding outwards,

And you know what moved

the particles and primordial ooze in space?

Sound Waves.

God speaks - and it happens.

God speaks the Word,

and it does not return empty.

God’s Word always fulfills its purpose.

We believe and confess that this Word of God

is Jesus of Nazareth,

Jesus the Christ,

who like us is born of the dust,

life breathed into Jesus by the Spirit,

but unlike us,

Jesus the Christ, completely human,

is also completely God.

Jesus the Christ holds it all together,

all created things:

sun and moon, shining stars, sea monsters,

creeping things and flying birds—

and, yes, even human beings.

Our invitation in faith today

is to trust that our God-in-Christ

still takes care of all things.

Christ sustains creation.

You and I - each and every human,

is made in the image of God,

and given that Spirit,

that breath,

that divine spark

an invitation to become co-creators with God,

and to join in as caretakers of God's good creation.

You and I are not the Creator.

But we are invited into creating and caretaking.

Consider for a moment that creation is an airplane.

You and I are the stewards.

Stewards care for the plane.

they don’t pilot,

they serve.

They ensure the aircraft is safe and welcoming

and the serve the people in need,

trusting the pilot to navigate.

When the air is turbulent,

they care for others.

When garbage builds up,

they clean up.

They ensure people are fed and comfortable.

The stewards help create a pleasant journey.

When it comes to this land we live in,

the people we live with,

the people and creation and creatures

we are called to live with and care for:

May we be good stewards of this airplane called earth,

eager to serve,

trusting the pilot.

May we be co-creators with God,

creating comfort and peace for those we travel with.

May Christ continue to hold us and all creation together.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
